Aloha no e Honu...


So we have a site visit to One'ula. The developer wants to put the drainage outlet into the ocean. Put it right here. There is nothing special about this area they say. It won't harm anything. It won't hurt the limu. It won't hurt the fish. It won't destroy the fragile cycle of life. This area is barren. It will discharge man's tainted pollution into the ocean. So who shows up? Just feet from where we were standing? Right where the outlet is going? A honu. The Hawaiians all saw the kupua. The developers feigned not noticing the honu feeding, dunking, diving and surfacing. And making eye contact. It is okay. I know about the chiefess buried there. With the two lei niho palaoa in her hand. The two palaoa `opu`u, signifying the sacred O'ahu chiefs. You did awesome honu. We saw you. We felt you. Most importantly. We understood you. E holomua kakou e honu kupua...
