Gauntlet...

I was curious to see the McDonald's worker adding fat to the french fry vat wearing big rubber gauntlets. It makes sense to avoid burns. I worked at McDonald's in Waikiki in high school as my first job. My fingers always smelled like hamburger meat. I spent two years there. My first raise was 9 cents an hour. My second raise was 11 cents an hour. They used to put me in the back cooking and when the lunch or dinner rush came in, they would put me up front at the cash register. I hated that assignment because I was usually all messed up from cooking and then had to face the customers up front smelling like grease. Once, some girls from my high school came in and they were in another line. I was trying to hide at the register as much as I could. They spotted me and all waved "hi!" I wanted to die. That sucked royally. We used to flip pickles up onto the ceiling, with our thumbs, behind the managers back and she would always try to find out who was doing it. Closing shift was always the best because we could run around and shoot each other with the Big Mac Sauce and Tartar Sauce caulking guns. I knew the Tartar Sauce had the furthest reach so I always went for that weapon. I never had protective gauntlets when I had to scoop the giant blobs of crisco like lard into the frying vats. I got splashed and burned from time to time. Guess some things change for the better in life. Those were certainly the good old days. Yeah, right...
