Kāneikokala...

This large figural rock resides at Hawaiian Hall at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum. A Hawaiian man by the name of Wahinenui in Kawaihae had recurring dreams of this stone pleading to be taken from the cold ground in which it lay buried. Wahinenui was led to the location and excavated the ground. He found the rock and reportedly passed away shortly thereafter. The pohaku was brought to the Bishop Museum in 1906 and set into the ground in Hawaiian Hall.

There have been attempts to remove the pohaku and relocate it outside but the stone has steadfastly refused to be extracted, somehow anchoring himself into the floor and ground. I have a beautiful friend with 'ike papa lua who communicates with spirits. She let me know that the pohaku is very much alive and the spirit inside desires visitors to Hawaiian Hall to pay him a visit first upon entering. I believe it. When I visit Hawaiian Hall, I always make my way over and give my respects and Aloha to Kāneikokala...
