Kaʻū...

We scoured the land of Kaʻū for signs of Hawaiian Life. A small group of us. We tripled in size as the ancestors joined our huaka'i. A very gifted companion, possessing 'ike pāpā lua, whom I met for the first time, delivered messages to the group. Having been with other gifted people, I knew this person was the real deal as well.

The ancestors were numerous. They spoke constantly, excitedly, pointing out the story of the place through what remained. Where the heiau were and who they were dedicated to. Where the healing plants were and what they were used for. They pointed out cultural sites that had been obliterated, and told of how, and when, they were dismantled, and where the pōhaku were taken to, in great sadness. They described their ceremonies. They named some kūpuna and Ali'i of the area. Most importantly, they pled with us to protect what was left. To help rebuild. To teach the children the important practices and values. To respect. To Love.

As wave after wave of chicken skin erupted throughout the day, I received beautiful affirmations and confirmations. Some of the living kūpuna on our huaka'i suffered immensely to move across the land with ailments of age, willingly torturing themselves, in pain that will last for weeks, to try to help save what little is left.  It was one of my most profound site visits in over 20 years. I was often moved to tears at their willingness to help us, the Present, as we tried to help them, the Past, for the children. The Future...
