Gathering...


A man gathering 'opihi, or salt-water limpets at the end of the day. Fresh food for dinner. For some families, the 'opihi is an 'aumakua, or deified and transfigured ancestral spirit. Every so often, a collector is swept to his or her death while harvesting 'opihi along the rugged coastlines. Food for thought...

Never turn your back on the ocean. One of the first things my wife taught me. And I never did. Sometimes a wave will come from nowhere too and grab you, some kind of mohai you become.

I feel bad...a 52 year old Hawaiian man from Kona just died yesterday picking 'opihi...they just found his body... : (

That is very sad indeed Kai, even if take all precautions, sometimes the Sea wants you and there is no escape. I was almost taken away twice myself
