I made a new friend today. This grasshopper would not let me anywhere near him at first. He scooted around a leaf to the opposite side when he first saw me. I went to the opposite side and startled him, as he quickly moved back to where he first was trying to hide from me again. Every time I moved, he would move, trying futilely to hide from me and my camera. Around and around we both went. When I saw his hind legs flex, as if he was about to launch into the thick deep tall grasses, I quickly backed off and tried to calm the energy in the air down. Then he relaxed and we started our merry-go-round again. Exasperated, I finally backed off and let him know that I had no intention of hurting him. I meant him no harm and apologized for stressing him out to begin with. I let him know that I wasn't trying to catch him to feed him to my pet Jackson's Chameleon because I didn't have a pet Jackson's Chameleon or any other hungry grasshopper-eating pet.  He seemed to...

Choices...

Image
Kamehameha Pai'ea, via his kapu messenger, K ī kane, delivered to M ō‘ī  Kahekili, the white and black stone. Kamehameha Pai'ea, via his kapu wohi messenger, Chief Makoa, delivered to Ali'i Keawemauhili, again the white and black stone. Send back the white stone, and we can live in Peace. Negotiate the boundaries and the resources through Diplomacy. Send back the black stone, and we shall decide upon a day and time. You bring your God and I will bring mine. We shall battle to the death. I shall destroy and consume everything you ever Loved.... The choice is Always yours...

Lessons...

Image
For some reason, I found it much easier to share Hawaiian history, culture and values with over a thousand children in dozens of different schools then to teach all of that to my own two sons. I still remain Hopeful however...
