Naniuaola...


The temple drum Naniuaola, in the midst of feather 'ahu'ula of the ali'i at Bishop Museum's Hawaiian Hall. This temple drum, made of coconut wood, sharkskin, olona fiber with human teeth incorporated into it, was from Papa'ena'ena Heiau, a luakini, or po'o kanaka class of heiau where human sacrifice occurred. Papa'ena'ena was located at Diamond Head near Waikiki on O'ahu. Millions of visitors now pass by the wahi kapu that once took human life in horrific ways, to find the beautiful healing forgiving spirit of Aloha. Such are the ways of Hawai'i...
