Pohaku...

Today I went out and found a nice rock. I then worked it against another large boulder until I shaped it into an 'ulu maika which Elliott is kindly holding up for the camera tonight. A rolling disc shaped stone which was utilized by my ancestors in a game where it was rolled on a long straight smooth maika track. One game was to roll it between two upright sticks protruding out of the ground a few inches apart. Another was to see how far you could roll it. A third was for two players to roll them hard and fast towards each other to hopefully hit and smash into each other where one 'ulu maika might break into two pieces. This was my first stone artifact reproduction to be used when we go out into the schools to teach the children about the beautiful utilitarian and cultural mea Hawai'i. Beautiful things Hawaiian...
