Hanapēpē...






The boys had no idea how sea salt was collected and harvested until they visited the beautiful salt ponds of Hanapēpē. I shared a story with them of a beautiful kupuna I knew years ago who worked the salt pans of her ancestors. She had a large jar at home with the pa'akai, or salt that her kupuna had harvested generations ago. She added a little of her pa'akai to it at each harvest and mixed it up. When she needed special pa'akai, she would take some from the jar, but never emptying the jar completely. This way, the pa'akai was always a little of her generation, and a little of her ancestor's generation...
