The students were able to touch and feel the soft cottony hapu'u fern pulu fiber. During the Civil War, cotton production was disrupted. Pulu fiber was harvested en masse and in a very destructive way for export to California and beyond to stuff pillows and mattresses. It eventually came to an end. Thank God. Enough precious Hawaiian things have been plundered and destroyed already...
