I took this photo 23 years ago. Watching the machines dig into the sand dunes on Maui. The sand dunes that were alive. The dunes that shifted back and forth over time and changed shape on their own with the natural elements and forces. The sand dunes that held and safeguarded what Mary Kawena Pukui defined as "our most cherished possession" as kanaka. The iwi, or bones, of our Beloved Ancestors. They have become part of the dunes. Part of the sands. We have now turned them into cement and concrete to desecrate iwi kupuna on other islands with wanton development. Kaumaha noho'i...
